Research Interest

In my research, I employ the highly conserved chaperone ClpX and ClpP protease as tools to explore cell division and antibiotic resistance in the important human pathogen Staphylococcus aureus. While antibiotics such as β-lactams were once very effective in treating staphylococcal infections, the rapid spread of methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) has made treatment increasingly difficult. Unraveling the molecular mechanisms underlying cell division and the ability of S. aureus to develop antibiotic resistance could provide the scientific basis for the development of drugs interfering with these mechanisms in the long run.
